New Jersey Schools Development Authority Breaks Ground on New STEAM High School in Paterson
Paterson, NJ - The New Jersey Schools Development Authority (SDA) today joined Paterson Public Schools, state and city officials, and students at a groundbreaking ceremony for the new Paterson STEAM High School. The ceremony brought together key partners involved with the project and celebrated the start of construction of a new school that will provide expanded opportunities for Paterson students.
“Today’s groundbreaking ceremony represents more than the start of construction for a new school, it reflects our shared commitment to ensuring Paterson students have access to a quality learning environment,” said SDA CEO Manuel Da Silva. “Projects of this scale require productive partnerships among school district, state and local officials, and our construction team. Thanks to our ongoing collaboration with key partners in Paterson, we are turning plans into progress on the ground – initiating construction of a new school that will support learning, growth, and student success.”

The new school will be an approximately 266,000 square-foot facility designed to educate a maximum of 1,564 students in ninth through twelfth grade. This high-quality facility will include: 30 general classrooms, six science labs, three art rooms, a learning lab, an aquaponics lab, an auditorium, a dance studio, vocal and instrumental music rooms, a cafeteria, a gymnasium, an auxiliary gymnasium, a weight room, a training room, locker rooms, OT/PT room, a media center, a technology hub, and a school store.
Once complete, this $200.8 million project will be the tenth capital project completed by the SDA in Paterson since the inception of the school construction program. The SDA previously invested more than $527 million in completed projects in Paterson.
The construction of this new school project is advancing through a design-build approach. The design-build method differs from a traditional design-bid-build approach by allowing the SDA to contract with one firm for both design and construction of a school facilities project. Dobco, Inc. is the design-build contractor. As part of the design-build contract, Dobco, Inc. is working with Spiezle Architectural Group, Inc. on the design. Accenture Infrastructure and Capital Projects, LLC., is managing the project.
